Are you looking for a rewarding way to spend your time in isolation?
Kathryn Stubbings from Heytesbury House has put out the call to local yarn crafters to help knit or crochet woollen poppies for veterans.
The Poppies with Purpose initiative is part of Cobden’s Heytesbury Haven project which provides free holidays for returned veterans who live with the pain, stress and anxiety of Australia’s conflicts and their roles in them.
Cobden is one of a growing number of towns involved with the Australian Veteran Respite Program.
Kathryn said she had been thinking about the idea for a while and the current Coronavirus crisis had simply fast-tracked it.
“I just thought the timing was right and people might like to put their isolation to good use and help us stockpile some poppies for our visiting veterans,” she said.
“It would be great if we can build a team of people. I’m happy to provide the wool and the patterns – all people have to do it put their hand up and let me know.”
Kathryn said the poppies would be given to the veterans as a reminder of their time at Heytesbury Haven and the generous Cobden and district community.
“It’s just a little idea to give back to those that gave so much for us,” she said.
